The series of 80 engravings entitled Los Caprichos, which belongs to the permanent collections of the National Gallery, was purchased together with the rest of Francisco Goya’s engraving series in 1961 by the then director Marinos Calligas and is the first – one of two (along with The Bullfights) – to be exhibited while the artist was alive. The series Los Caprichos, which Francisco Goya published in early 1799, is a landmark work in his artistic development, as for the first time the official painter of the Spanish Court is allowed to express the revolutionary character of an art mature and freed from the constraints of public commissions.
