Music, New York and a double path to the top, where sweet success and utter loneliness lurk. Scorsese’s cinematic loves come together in a melodic, flashy and, as always, bittersweet tribute to the era of big bands and swing, with Golden Globe nominees Robert De Niro and Liza Minnelli delightfully portraying an egotistical saxophonist and a talented singer. Well-crafted musical numbers, nostalgic depiction of the era and a moving, if not entirely solid, handling of a story about the price of success.
